Project Overview
“Wax Rat” is a love letter to North Narrabeen Beach, to golden summer days, salty skin and sunburn. “Wax Rat” contrasts the tense claustrophobia of the family car ride, with the golden expanse of sun, sand and surf. It captures the desperation of a child trying to win their parents’ attention, while those parents are losing their patience on what’s supposed to be a Good Day.
Location & Setting:
Filmed on location at North Narrabeen Beach, the film captures the raw beauty and inspiration of this iconic surfing spot. The beach serves not only as a setting but as a character that influences the story’s emotional beats.
Cinematography
I wanted this film to feel like a childhood memory and the way the old Nikon lenses captured the hot weather and beautiful flares gives the film a really unique look. The film immerses viewers in Carly’s perspective, using a combination of handheld camera work and stylised framing to create an intimate connection with her struggles and triumphs. The visceral experience of learning to surf is captured with dynamic, water-level shots, placing the audience in the water with Carly.
Outcome:
“Wax Rat” stands out as a poignant exploration of family, identity, and the often unspoken challenges of growing up. Its authentic portrayal of a young girl’s desire to find her place in a world of conflicting expectations resonates deeply, making it a powerful cinematic experience.
